There is something about the moon that speaks to the deepest part of me, that resonates with my very soul and always has. The moon is the divine feminine. She is mysterious. Her light is not harsh, but more subtle and intimate. Her vibration is that of understanding, nurturing, and going inward. I can never resist her call. When she shines on clear nights, I must go out and greet her with, “Hello, Sister Moon, my dearest friend.” The moon really is my oldest and dearest friend. As I child, I would sit at my window at night peering out at the full moon imagining myself dancing in her glistening pale light and feeling completely free and spirited like a fairy in some imaginal land. It is hard to put into words our connection. She has seen me at my lowest and toughest times. I have cried the most sorrowful cries under her pale light, and she has seen me through my darkest nights. The moon’s energy and light always have an ethereal effect on me, particularly the full moon. For those moments in her light, I am between worlds. I feel airy and light and connected to something greater than me. I am able to somehow release that negative energy dragging me down, as if it is washed away into the earth by the moon's light washing over me like divine glowing water. I feel a sense of renewal and surge of positivity that always helps me continue on.
By now you probably have come to realize that I have pretty good imagination. Lol. My imagination has served me well in my life. I would go so far to say that my imagination is the reason I am here where I am today with still great hope in my heart. And I would also go so far to say that I believe that not much separates that which is imaginal and that which is real. Everything that is in our physical world was once in someone’s imagination. So, yes, the moon is indeed my friend just as much as any human and we exchange energy. 😊
Now, what the heck does the moon have to do with health and wellness you may be asking. Well, a lot really. We can learn a lot from the moon, from her cycles and from her symbolism. The moon symbolizes spirituality, intuition, nature, seasons, and cycles. Science has found that those individuals with a spiritual practice tend to have a greater sense of well-being and are more likely to engage in health-related behaviors. Having a spiritual practice imparts a sense of inner peace, hope, meaning, and strength. Similar to spirituality, intuition also may improve well-being. Intuition is an insight or knowing that comes from within and tuning in to self. Tapping into that spiritual, intuitive force allows one to resonate with the vibration of healing, balance, and vitality as well as manifestation and success. Modern science and medicine is beginning to recognize this phenomenon. The power of the human mind is great. One example of this is the placebo effect – a beneficial effect of an inactive substance attributed purely to the belief that the inactive substance is beneficial. Belief is a powerful thing. So, believe in your full potential and dreams. The moon is a great reminder of our spiritual nature and a reminder to dream, imagine, manifest, and connect with that beyond our physical world.
The moon is also a reminder of our natural cycles. The moon appears in the sky in phases that repeat in a cycle. Ladies, we are all too familiar with cycles. From adolescence to menopause, we are bound in a seemingly endless cycle whether we like it or not. Throughout our menstrual cycles, our hormones fluctuate and cycle affecting just about every aspect of our being including energy, motivation, mental health, sleep, focus, tolerance to stress, and desire for socialization and intimacy. For example, we tend to be in better moods, able to multitask much easier, and able to perform better in sports/exercise and mental tasks during the first half of the menstrual cycle known as the follicular phase (day 1 at onset of menses to about day 14 when ovulation occurs) when estrogen levels gradually increase, and we experience irritability, depression, mood swings, and trouble concentrating during the second half of the menstrual cycle known as the luteal phase (about day 14 beginning with ovulation to the onset of menses) when estrogen and serotonin ( the feel-good neurotransmitter) levels drop and progesterone increases. In cultures where humans are more in tuned with nature and less exposed to artificial light, women’s menstrual cycles tend to be in sync with the moon’s cycle. The moon’s phases can help guide us through our menstrual cycle as well as our life and on our soul’s journey. The new moon correlates with menses and symbolizes new beginnings and gives us an opportunity to reflect and change direction or start anew if the path we are on no longer serves us. The waxing moon symbolizes taking action on our new path and correlates with our follicular phase when energy, mood, and mental strength are at peak. The full moon correlates with ovulation and symbolizes fertility and creation as well as completion and celebrating what you have accomplished. It also symbolizes releasing of what no longer serves us. The waning moon correlates with the luteal phase when we have a tendency to retreat and rest and symbolizes reflection, going inward, letting go, decluttering, healing, and resting. Take this time to find clarity and redefine your direction and what you desire. We can use the phases of the moon to help us continually learn and grow into the best version of ourselves.
After reading this blog, I hope it inspires you to develop a relationship with the moon, her feminine energy, her intuitive divine spirit, and her cycles which reflect our very own feminine side and cycles.
