“Alice laughed. ‘There’s no use trying,’ she said. ‘One can’t believe impossible things.’ ‘I daresay you haven’t had much practice,’ said the Queen. ‘When I was younger, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.’”
~Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Impossible. Not able to occur, exist, or be done. Look around you. How many things do you see that were once thought to be impossible. Computers, internet, Wi-Fi, smart phones, microwaves, jet planes, cars, electricity, electric cars that drive themselves, magnetic levitation trains, nuclear power, rockets, space stations, MRIs, CT scans, chemo, antibiotics. I could go on and on. So, what’s my point? Well then, is anything really impossible? Think about it. Really makes you wonder. All of these things began first as ideas, thoughts, dreams in someone’s head. Someone who refused to believe that it was impossible.
A message I remember hearing all too often growing up in school was to have “realistic” goals. My chance of being a professional women’s basketball player was less than 0.01%. My chance of being an animator for Disney or a famous artist was also very slim. So, needless to say I didn’t pursue these dreams because I BELIEVED that it was impossible. Now as a parent as well as a medical professional, I see the detriment of squashing hopes, dreams, and creativity no matter how “unrealistic” they may be. I never tell anyone that anything is impossible. Because, quite honestly, I do not believe that anything is impossible. If someone can dream it and believe it, then it can be manifested. The human mind is that amazing as evidenced by everything around us.
Health and healing are very much influenced by what you believe. The body is equipped to heal itself if given the right environment and nutrients and if one has the right mind set believing that the body can. The placebo effect is an example of how belief can positively affect health. If one believes that an inactive/inert substance will cure them or improve their symptoms, research shows that it actually does. The subconscious mind can tell the body what it wants and the body listens. The trick is learning how to tap into the subconscious mind and wield its power. Active meditation allows you to do this, particularly when your brain waves slow into alpha and theta states. Think of that state right before you fall asleep or lucid dreaming. Some medical professions have realized the power of the mind in patient outcomes and have incorporated specific meditation practices with standard treatments where patients are visualizing in deep meditative states that they are beating their disease and regaining their health.
Meditation for healing is a practice and takes time to develop and to trust in the process. There isn’t one “right” way to meditate either. Try different methods and find which is right for you. One example is the Silva Method developed by Jose Silva and then popularized by Vishen Lakhiani. I must say that I love Vishen Lakhiani’s book The Code of the Extraordinary Mind!
